Is This Racist?

While perusing the selections on NetFlix.com I came across this scathing one-star customer review of the film adaptation of Terry McMillan’s Disappearing Acts:

To be honest, this is more of a film that black will appreciate while other audiences will find to be of little interest. ..I’m not a racist, but — face it — the characters, relationships & situations in this film are definitely more of a black nature. Besides that, its just a boring story, altogether. ..Now, that’s not to say that other audiences can’t appreciate it, but — I can see why some black people might “EMBRACE” this story while other audiences would just be like, “Aww, thats nice”. ..For example, the story takes place in a black community and you have the typical guns/drugs/not enough money/blaming “the man” for their short-comings/some romance thrown in for flavor/a script filled with ghetto slang, etc. …And probably the worse part is, there’s very little action thrown in (which is what made “New Jack City” cool!). ..instead, you’ve got “drama–more drama–a little action–and still More drama”! ..[snore!] ..Personally, I shut the movie off after 45 minutes. But, before you start thinking I’m a racist, just go ahead & watch this, yourself, and see what you think. …My personal grade for it=D

Here’s a hint: Whenever you have to say “I’m not racist”, then you are clearly coming across as racist. To add insult to injury, the reviewer said the “action” made New Jack City cool. Now I know Disappearing Acts wasn’t the most brilliant film, but it should be credited as one of those movies (along with Love Jones, Soulfood, etc.) that have tried to break away from the drugs and violence themes that were so prominent in black film during the whole Boyz ‘N the Hood era. And furthermore, why is this guy comparing DA to NJC anyway? Is this the scale by which he rates black movies?
Oh no, dude, you might not be racist, but your mind is so enslaved.

I agree… Anytime you hear someone start off a statement with, “I’m not a racist BUT…” you better brace yourself for what you’re about to hear. That’s like one of those ignorant, “But, I have Black friends” statements.
I get so tired of people placing everything we do in these tiny boxes. What is a “black nature” ??? :(
Anyway, he gets an ‘F’ for a sorry review and a limited mind.

He could of had the courtesy to remove is Klan get up before making these comments.
There is no way in two hells NumbNuts can even compare DA to NJC. The issues addressed in these movies are only a glimpse of things that have happened in Black communites, not the bigger picture. These are two completely different movies focusing on two completely different problems. These issues aren’t only distictive of the Black community, EVERY race has these issues.

A favorite quote of mine “Ignore ignorance” This person has obviously formed their opinion. Action has always spoken louder than words from obvious showing that we are no longer just ‘thugs’, ‘gangstas’ and ‘whores’ in movie scripts. We shouldn’t worry about having any one accepting us in the box that they have built. We are nor have we ever been monolithic but you would never have thunk it judging by the views and opinions of said person(s). I say press on.. we have bigger issues to deal with.

The guy is a penis head. The only reason he probably liked New Jack City is because there were a couple token white people in the supporting cast. Disappearing Acts was gaw-bawg and I didn’t enjoy it; but guess what? I’ve been black all my life. I don’t think you can attribute the appreciation of a movie to race… and that’s exactly what the guy did. Off with his head!

I would have busted his ass for that comment (no pun intended). What exactly is a “Black nature” anyway? And as far as his breakdown of the story, there are comparable movies that have been made among those same storylines. Break out of the slave mentality please!
But Netflix got their money from him…so there! HA!

    Nekaybaaw says:

truth is they would rather see our hood stories and folk busting guns on the corner. in a random fashion. and yes this writer is racist. like you said if you have to point out that you aren’t then you probably are. i wouldn’t be surprised if that was rush limbaugh writing that reveiw..lol
nevertheless this is how black america is veiwed. reality not fantasy.

Good looking, good looking (thank you for the link). xox

Not racist … But “typical” ignorance and stupidity. When Ward Connerly is fighting to say that society is color blind because he married a white woman, your average white person will SHOW that we are not far from Jim Crow!

Nova, some people are destined to never get it. Don’t let it tick you off. :o )

    Trey says:

Shit like that pisses me off. What a dumb ass. Just because I’m black doesn’t mean I can’t relate to “A Beautiful Mind” or “Catch Me If You Can.” That’s a prime example of ignorance for you. And I agree about what you said about him stating “I am not a racist.” If he ain’t racist, his ass got some serious racist tendencies.

    Trey says:

Oh yeah by the way, I’d just like to say, that I am Black and I didn’t like Disappearing Acts. My cousin and I watched it together and just got pissed at the fact that Sanaa Lathan was such a strong, independent Black woman and kept letting Wesley Snipes’ ass bring her down. It was alright.
But again, the fact that homeboy felt he couldn’t relate to a movie just b/c it had a black cast shows that there’s STILL something wrong with this country.
